English School and College Founders
A list of the founders of notable schools, colleges and universities in England throughout British history. The list begins with the founding of The King's School of Canterbury by St. Augustine in 597 AD and tracks the opening of institutes of learning throughout the British Isles through the creation of Downe House in 1907. Many of the listed colleges are based in one of England's two great centers of learning, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Many of the oldest schools on the list - such as St. Augustine's King's School - did not receive a royal charter until many years, even centuries, after they were founded. (The King's School initially opened as an abbey.) Many of the schools formed initially in the Middle Ages did not receive a royal charter until the 16th Century or later.)
