Giant Panda
A mascot for the WWF (World Worldlife Fund), the Giant Panda from Central China is the most famous and beloved of all bears because of its cute black and white markings, as well as playful and docile demeanor. Sadly, though, it is endangered due to many factors, the worst being human encroachment. In fact, at the time of this writing, only a few thousand are left in the wild (estimates are between 1K-2K).

In spite of its uncertain future, many conservationist groups as well as the Chinese government have been working hard to prevent the extinction of the Giant Panda. Not only are there laws against poaching, several hundred pandas are now in captivity to spread public awareness about their plight, as well as aid in research that could help scientists come up with ways to save them.

Did You Know? There is another species of panda called the red panda. This is a smaller, raccoon-like distant relative of the Giant Panda that also originates from Asia.

Baby Harp Seal
The harp seal ("Phoca groenlandica") is an earless seal that lives in the Arctic in one of three large communities. When fully grown, it's a typical grey-colored seal with dark markings on its back. But as a baby, it is born with yellow fur that quickly turns white, like that of a polar bear. Called "whitecoats", these pups are about the most adorable thing you ever did see!

Why are baby harps so white and the adults a greyish-black? It's a clever form of camouflage. Harp seal pups spend most of their time on land while their parents spend time in the ocean. Since land is covered in ice and snow, nature devised a clever plan-- it made their fur white as a form of camouflage, to protect them from predators.

The cute phase of white coats don't last forever, though-- whitecoats shed their fur in about two weeks, swapping their white fur for a grey one.

Did You Know? One of the ironies about the adorability of the baby harp seal is that the same thing that has made it cute has made it prey to hunters. Because of their beautiful white fur, they are hunted in droves yearly by human beings. Many efforts have been made to try to stop this practice (The Canadian government banned hunting for commercial purposes). In spite of a few laws put in place, the hunting of harp seals still goes on annually.

Bottle-nosed Dolphin
Some animals are cute because of how they look, but the bottle-nosed dolphin ("Tursiops truncatus") is one of those rare animals that are adorable both inside and out! Curious, intelligent, and playful, dolphins always seem to be in a perpetually happy mood, thanks to their smiling beaks and twinkling eyes.

They're also one of the friendliest animals of the animal kingdom-- unlike so many animals that shy away from us or act aggressively, they actively seek the companionship of human beings. They have even been known to rescue them from dangerous situations. Not surprisingly, people actively flock to beaches where a dolphin or two are known to swim, hoping to catch a glimpse of and even frolic with these friends from the sea.

Did You Know?In recent years, the marine biology world has been actively discouraging the practice of encouraging locals to interact with dolphins. One reason is that this has caused dolphins to unwittingly get injured when they swim too close to boats. There's another reason: more evidence is showing that some dolphins can be no less unpredictable or aggressive than any other animal, especially when provoked or frightened. In a famous case many years ago, a man died of internal injuries when a dolphin rammed him in the stomach after it was being teased.

Baby Emperor Penguin!
Whether it be fish or fowl, all baby animals are pretty darned cute! But if we had to pick the cutest, most adorable baby animal of all, it would have to be the baby emperor penguin! As an adult, the Emperor Penguin ("Aptenodytes forsteri") is a majestic-looking bird with black, yellow, and white markings. But as a baby, it is a cute pudgy chick of grey, black, and white feathers that would melt the heart of even the most hardened person. They are so cute, in fact, that toy versions have been made of them!

But how did these adorable baby penguins-- who come from such a remote place (the Antarctic) become so famous? A few years ago there was the movie, March of the Penguins, which documented the extraordinary lengths to which Emperor Penguins go to hatch and incubate their young. It was here that the public was introduced to them for the first time-- and fell in love!

Did You Know?Unlike most birds, emperor penguin eggs aren't incubated by their mothers, but by their fathers. Once the mother lays her egg, she leaves for the ocean during the winter months and doesn't come back until spring. The father then incubates it for several months during the cold and bitter winter months, huddling close to other father penguins for warmth.
