Four historic devales
Among the four devales said to safeguard Kandy is Natha Devale, the oldest existing structure in Kandy dating from the 14th century. It was intimately associated with the Kings of Kandy who conducted various rites here. The other historic Hindu temples are the Vishnu temple north of the Natha Devale in the inner palace complex and the temple dedicated to goddess Pattini west of Natha Devale. These display distinctive Kandyan style architecture while the temple dedicated to God Kataragama away from the palace complex in the middle of town displays characteristics of a traditional Hindu temple. All are still popular places of worship.
National Museum Kandy
For visitors with a historical bent, a visit to the National Museum Kandy housed in the former queen's quarters is a must. While the museum building itself is an interesting artifact demonstrating typical Kandyan architecture, the museum's collection features antiquities from various eras of the Kandyan kingdom including furnishings, jewellery, old manuscripts, wood and stone carvings, lacquer ware, brass ware, small arms and a replica of the crown of the last king of Kandy.
Ceylon Tea Museum in Hantane
Housed in a tea factory built in the 1920s, the Ceylon Tea Museum in Hantane, close to the place where it all began, tells the history of tea in Sri Lanka through hundreds of objects that have played a part in every aspect of turning two leaves and a bud into an internationally popular product.
The Temple of the Tooth or Sri Dalada Maligawa
Housed in a part of the former royal palace is the chief 'must see place' in Kandy. While being an excellent example of the Kandyan architectural style, it is more important as one of the holiest sites of Buddhists around the world on account of Buddha's tooth relic being enshrined here. The temple hosts over a million visitors annually.
The British Garrison Cemetery
Just beyond the National Museum this is where nearly 200 colonizers, men, women and children, were buried from 1817 to 1870. It provides a glimpse of health conditions of the time and the type of colonials who worked here. Some names still ring a bell.
Wwi
Another cemetery this time a war cemetery lies in a beautifully landscaped location on Lady Mcallum Drive along the Mahaweli River. It contains the graves of servicemen of several nationalities from around the British Empire originally buried here and those brought from other cemeteries around the country. It is a beautiful memorial to those who gave their lives in two world wars.
Kandy Lake
Setting off the Temple of the Tooth to great advantage, the Kandy Lake was constructed by the last King of Kandy over 200 years ago. The island in the centre is said to have been the king's bathing pavilion. Apart from history, the walkway along the lake is a popular place for a relaxing stroll with residents as well as visitors. Aitken Spence Hotels an operator of premier Kandy hotels assists to plan excursion to places of interest in and around the city.
St Paul's Church

Located in the historic part of Kandy the Anglican Church was completed in 1848 and originally served the British garrison in the city. The brick exterior of the church is in the Neo-Gothic style and the interior is categorized as English Victoriana.

The areas around Kandy also abound with historic and natural attractions.

Udawatte Kele
Once the sole preserve of Kandyan royalty, Udawatte Kele is now a forest reserve overlooking the Temple of the Tooth. The muddy lake in the centre apparently was the bathing place of the king's many concubines. Now the forest is a popular destination of nature lovers who enjoy its shaded paths, local flora, myriad birds, butterflies and small mammals dominated by noisy troops of macaques.
The Royal Palace Complex
Located north of the Temple of the Tooth is a 'must see' historic site. Various kings constructed their own buildings enlarging the complex. The oldest part probably dating from the 14th century is said to be the section facing the temple dedicated to god Natha. The palace complex including the audience hall where the king held court now preserved as an archaeological museum displays characteristics of the Kandyan architectural style in its designs and embellishments.
