This is a list of the best pop songs of 2013 so far. From Katy Perry's hit Roar and Britney Spear's hit Work Bitch, to Fun.'s Some Nights and Jay Z's Magna Carta...Holy Grail. Yet what is pop music? What started as meaning simply "Popular music" has come to be defined by certain styles of melody and composition, yet simultaneously still incorporating such styles from hip-hop to alternative rock and beat oriented dance music.
What makes a great pop song? What makes a forgettable one? Can a pop song contain substance, meaning, lasting value, yet still make it to the common play cycle of the top radio stations and clubs? Do pop fanatics only want something catchy, only something to dance to, simple lyrics and cliches? How long will these songs live in our memory?
This list is by no means comprehensive, as the year has not even come to a close yet. But who can make a definitive list of a class of music that blows and fades so quickly? Top 40 stations will forever be stock full of those songs which get the most plays, not the songs that people might argue are the best pop songs of the year. So here is where you come in--add what songs you feel are the best of this year so far, as well as the late comers, and get to voting.
