The worst athletes of 2013 are some of our favorite athletes, top performers in their various leagues, or at least they used to be before bad decisions, season-ending injuries or flat out poor play. We all expected these studs to be the stars but all simply failed to produce or worse during 2013.
Every sports fan can probably name one favorite player who had a crappy season or proved to be the opposite of clutch and this list is full of them. With high expectations sometimes comes a higher ledge off which to fall, such as with 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, whose 2013 season was far from good enough to earn him the expected second trophy, or 2011 Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin, whose mediocre play was stifled by an injury during the NBA Playoffs, or B.J. Upton who batted a whopping .136 despite having one of the richest contracts in Major League Baseball.
It would be easy to pick athletes like Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning, who threw more interceptions in single games (and made some hilarious faces doing so) than some have in a single season, or Derrick Rose, whose injury, or so he claimed, kept him out of the lineup at crucial times, as those who were the worst of the season. Unfortunately, they don't even come close to the absolute worst sports players of 2013.
Case in point: Aaron Hernandez. The aspiring NFL Hall of Fame tight end had no 2013 season after he was arrested for murder. Also in the category of unfortunate but true: Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius. Like Hernandez, Pistorius found himself on the wrong side of the law after he was charged with shooting and killing his girlfriend. Athletes can have bad seasons but it really doesn't get worse than murder.
